8 Savory Autumn Soup Recipes

09/30/2014 by Jennifer 3 Comments

Whenever I post roundups of food recipes, I feel a little lame because I’m not a chef or a baker or a foodie at all. I could come up with so many excuses like “I don’t have time” or “I have a kitchen made for ants” but excuses aside, I just flat out think it’s boring. However, I have a huge amount of respect for people who do cook. Especially for those who cook simple things! When the weather cools down more, I want to start eating soup like every day. From a lady who has never made soup from scratch, here are eight recipes that I would consider making this season…

(top left to right)

1. Sweet Potato Vichyssoise | Design Love Fest
2. Broccoli Cheddar Baked Soup | A Beautiful Mess
3. Thai Chicken and Coconut Soup | Food and Wine
4. Creamy Oven Roasted Tomato Soup | Strudel and Cream
5. Vegetarian Black Bean Soup | The Corner Kitchen
6. Slow Cooked Moroccan Lentil Soup | Zomt Bakes
7. Creamy Curried Cauliflower Soup | The Kitchn
8. Laila’s Arabic Lentil Soup | Veggie Belly

All of these look so good and I’m sure they would be pretty easy to make. How hard could soup be? I’m going to try and start with that yummy looking moroccan lentil soup (#6) and I’ll let you know how it goes.

Have a great day! Also, if you haven’t entered my giveaway with Angela yet, go for it! Today is the very last day to win a slouchy crocheted beanie and huge comfy crocheted infinity scarf from us. Make sure you’re all set for the upcoming chilly weather.

DIY Minimal Brass Jewelry Hanger

09/29/2014 by Jennifer 12 Comments

My favorite DIY projects are those that are functional, and I most definitely needed something to hang up my necklaces. As a self-proclaimed non-accessorizer, I don’t think about wearing jewelry often. This handy brass jewelry hanger will hopefully remind me of the necklaces I do have.

DIY Minimal Brass Jewelry Hanger

This is really the simplest project if you start with the right supplies. I ended up doing quite a bit of experimenting.

DIY Minimal Brass Jewelry Hanger

Supplies needed: a brass tube, rope, s-hooks (I recommend buying more than 5 to balance things out), scissors
May be needed: Pliers, wrench, crochet thread

I found most of my supplies at Ace Hardware.

First things first – open up those s-hooks! To make things easier, you might want to choose open s-hooks to begin with. I was really set on this brass color (rather than steel), so I used pliers and a wrench to turns these 8’s into S’s.

The next step is to feed the rope through the brass tube. Unless you have really tiny rope, it might be hard to feed it all the way through. I decided to pull crochet thread through the tube first, tightly tying my thread to the end of the rope.

Cut and tie your rope together at whichever length you’d like. Loop your s-hooks onto the pole and hang up your beautiful jewelry for the whole wide world (or just you) to see!

Hope you enjoyed this project! Do you have any fancy ways of displaying your jewelry?

I love the big wave of change that seems to come with a new season. Sometimes change occurs on its own and sometimes we just get restless and make it happen. This past week, I decided to cut off all my hair (Not really, it’s still long. Just feels so short to me!) and I got a new job! What the! I am so excited and still kind of in shock over how quickly it all happened. I will tell you all about it eventually, but for now I just want to share my appreciation for all things fall! Apparently, a roundup of a trillion pumpkin spice recipes wasn’t enough for me.

First up: peach pie and a peach spritzer! Oh my. This looks so delicious. The coffee shop I’m sitting at is right across the street from a pie place and boy am I tempted to go over there this very second.

This oversized pink shawl coat from Anthropologie is too perfect. I love everything about it, except for that it is $600. Nope. Moving on…

I usually shy away from anything with too many fruit flavors, but this rhubarb, grapefruit, and thyme cocktail looks too delicious to pass up!

Hot chocolate and tiny macarons? Together? This photo makes me want to curl up under a pile of blankets for about a week.

Have a beautiful fall weekend and I’ll see you Monday with a DIY!

Happy Fall Giveaway

09/23/2014 by Jennifer 3 Comments

Good morning and Happy Fall! To those of you who stuck it out and waited to celebrate until the “official” first day of fall, high five! To those who went ahead and celebrated fall on the 1st of September, I don’t blame you. There is nothing quite like the first rainy day after (or sometimes during) summer. Or the first time needing to bring a sweater outside. Or the first chai latte. Fall is magical.

Happy Fall Giveaway | Earl Grey Blog

Today, Angela of If Found, Make and I are teaming up for a very special giveaway. If you haven’t met Angela yet, she is the owner of Garden and Sea, an Etsy shop full of beautiful hand crocheted accessories. She also blogs at If Found, Make, where she shares everything from DIY projects to resources for creatives. Over the weekend, I traveled to LA and was able to meet up with Angela for coffee! We decided that a great way to welcome fall would be to give away some cozy fall essentials.

Internship with Bramble Workshop

09/22/2014 by Jennifer 14 Comments

When I moved up to Portland a few months ago, I was lucky to be able to easily transfer jobs. But I knew I wanted more than just retail experience on my resume. I needed to be creatively challenged and was particularly interested in helping with large-scale handcrafted displays. Through Instagram, I learned that Jessica of Bramble Workshop was also moving to Portland! So I put her at the top of my list of people to contact. We had coffee at the cutest little cafe, chatted for a while, and ta-da! I began interning for her shortly afterward. I didn’t think creative connections could be made that easily, but perhaps I hadn’t tried hard enough in the past.

Through Bramble Workshop, Jessica creates beautiful detailed window displays, backdrops, and installations for events and companies. To give you an idea of her work and process,  here are some photos I grabbed from her Instagram:

Bramble Workshop

We usually meet up about once a week at her studio and work on whatever backdrops or projects need to be done. Other times, we just get coffee and brainstorm creative craft and business ideas.

While writing my list of creative businesses and people to contact in Portland a few months ago, I was seriously expecting the worst outcome. I thought every effort was a shot in the dark. But by sending that brief email to Jessica, I ended up with a fun, creative internship and a wonderful new friend. Even if you live in a small town where nobody has heard of a blog (those towns are real), I want to encourage you to be brave and look for those people with similar interests as you. :)

To see the rest of Jessica’s work (and a few projects I’ve helped out with!), visit the Bramble Workshop website or follow along on Instagram.
