Resources for Bloggers

10/15/2014 by Jennifer 3 Comments

Hey there! Here are some blog resources from some of my favorite bloggers. Hopefully these helpful articles can inspire us to get creative and make the most of the week.

Resources for Bloggers | Earl Grey Blog

1. Melyssa from The Nectar Collective recently wrote about how to grow your blog or business using Twitter. I used to use Twitter solely for funny lame jokes, but now I use it for Earl Grey purposes too (here’s my account btw if you want to be friends!). However, Twitter is not my specialty. I always forget I even have it. This article was helpful in reminding me that there are simple ways to be active as a blogger on Twitter. Woohoo! Thanks Melyssa!

2. Oh, Writer’s Block. Always getting me down. I absolutely love this post on beating writer’s block by Jess of Stamp in my Passport. She shares three helpful and genuine ways to reconnect with yourself and get over that dang lack of inspiration.

3. Last month on Ember & March, Amber shared about the difference between growing your blog and gaining a following. She notes that both are a little necessary and touches on the importance of authenticity. I couldn’t agree with her more.

4. Jess at June Letters wrote a beautiful post about allowing yourself to be a beginner. What a good reminder. It is so important to remember that everything takes practice and that we shouldn’t set so many unrealistic expectations on ourselves.

Have you been focusing on or learning anything in particular lately?

Plaid Patterns for Fall

10/14/2014 by Jennifer 1 Comment

I’m one of those people whose style changes drastically at the turn of each season. I wear bright colors and florals all year and then as soon as it feels like autumn, I get heart eyes for dark rich colors, warm sweaters, and apparently plaid. My love for plaid is purely seasonal (sorry plaid!). I know that I probably won’t think about wearing plaid after January, but right now I think it’s the prettiest.

Plaid Styles for Fall | Earl Grey Blog

1. Plaid Automatic Stick Umbrella | Totes
2. Of Your Own Accordion Flat | ModCloth
3. Tartan Mugs | Williams Sonoma
4. Soft Woven Plaid Notebook | Alexander Olch
5. Late Night Lecture Bag | ModCloth
6. Burberry Plaid Designer iPhone Case | All is One on Society6
7. Plaid Behavior Dress | ModCloth
8. Plaid Infinity Scarf | Sole Society
9. Plaid Print Hair Bow | ASOS

I still can’t decide it if would be wise or not to buy something plaid knowing that I’ll be over it by spring, but I’m thinking that hair bow could be a nice seasonal accessory. What do you think? Are you a plaid person?

Calligraphy Starter Kit from Uncommon Goods

10/13/2014 by Jennifer 5 Comments

Modern calligraphy is such a common thing in Blogland. Everywhere you look, everywhere you go… there’s calligraphy. I’ve gone into shops looking for calligraphy kits before, but most of them taught the old school western style. Over the weekend, however, I had the chance to try out an amazing Calligraphy Starter Kit by Diva Pyari from Uncommon Goods.

Uncommon Goods is a privately owned company based in Brooklyn, New York that specializes in providing creative and handcrafted gifts for all types of people. What I love most about them is that they are very socially and environmentally aware. Most products are made in the United States and about half are made by hand. Uncommon Goods partners with four non-profits and even reaches out to the community, hosting product design and art challenges. And I could go on… I’m loving everything I’ve learned about them so far! Finding out about retailers that care for the earth and humanity gives me so much hope.

Calligraphy Starter Kit

So, about this Calligraphy Starter Kit. I was really nervous that I would try it out and fail and not be able to blog about it. But it wasn’t so bad! I mean, it was really bad at first but I slowly started to get the hang of it. It turned out to be really addicting! I am already planning to go out and buy some different supplies (colorful ink perhaps!).

In the spirit of keeping it real, here is my first attempt at writing some letters. Yikes.

I experimented with different ways of holding the pen before I was comfortable with it. The instructions advised to hold the nib over a flame for a few seconds and that made a huge difference in the inkflow. This next picture is still a little rough but better right? Pretty sure modern calligraphy is allowed to be messy. :)

If you’re looking for gifts for friends, family, or yourself (treat yo’self!), Uncommon Goods has a plethora of unique choices. Here is the calligraphy kit if you’re interested. You can also check out the gifts for women here and gifts for men here. Oh and there are tons of cute gifts for little ones here! I’m a true fan. I’ll be back next week with another review of their products because I couldn’t stop with just one.

Have you done any calligraphy? Any suggestions on fancy ink or nib brands?

If It Were Easy, Everyone Would Do It

10/10/2014 by Jennifer 1 Comment

This quote has been on my mind all week! I may be taking it a bit out of context, but it brings to mind the many times I have passed up pursuing an idea simply because “it’s been done”. This has stopped me from following through on several projects I was originally excited about. In reality, it’s okay to be inspired by others. More importantly, we’ve got to remember that not everyone is doing it. That’s an overgeneralized statement.

If it were easy, everyone would do it.

Recently, I created something in Photoshop that I thought was way too cliche and simple. It ended up taking a really long time and even involved some strategizing. Hey-o. Not so easy.

Anyway, I took a mini blog vacay this week to work on my new project, but I’ll be back next week to share some crafts and tidbits about the new website. Have a beautiful weekend!

Schoolhouse Electric Favorites

10/07/2014 by Jennifer 5 Comments

In celebration of starting my new job at Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co. (today!), I want to share some of my favorite products from their website. I am someone who gets tired of quirky styles very quickly so I try to only buy home items that feel classic. It’s almost like a discipline. A few months ago, I was dead set on owning a hot pink couch, but now I’m over it. See? Gotta stick with the simple stuff. Luckily, Schoolhouse Electric knows what’s up. I don’t think I will ever get tired of their timeless midcentury modern style.

Aside from beginning a new job, I am working on a new website! I’ve been dreaming it up all year long. The more I finish in the next couple of weeks, the more details I can share soon. So excited.

Talk to you soon! Have a beautiful autumn Tuesday.

Best of September + Giveaway Winner!

10/03/2014 by Jennifer 4 Comments

Every year, I get all freaked out about ominous October. This year I didn’t even have time to anticipate it. September was full of so many exciting things as well as challenges, both of which paved the way for a might fine October. Let’s look back on some happy moments…

Earl Grey Blog

 1. I got crafty! You might have noticed that DIY projects haven’t been the main focus of my blog for a while. I do still love them though. During September, I shared the easiest watercolor confetti tutorial. This week, I shared this minimal brass jewelry hanger that I am obsessed with. As you can see, I also received Happy Handmade Home in the mail and was super impressed. Those ladies never fail to be amazing.

2 & 3. My bestie Sara moved to Portland! We drove over to Rockaway Beach for a little reunion and the next day, we visited this punny breakfast food truck, Fried Egg I’m in Love.

4. I’m finally experiencing more nature adventures here! Sara and I went on a beautiful hike at the arboretum a couple weeks ago. Going back to the forest again today. :)

5. Since I’ve moved here, my time has been split three ways between work, my apartment, and Heart Roasters. They are getting all of my money. I need to cut back…

6. I was lucky to have a couple trips planned back to California! The first time, I flew to LA and dressed up like a crazy cupcake to see Katy Perry with my good friend Bianca. Then earlier this week, I drove my car down to California and flew back up here. Because…parking is expensive. Note to everyone – don’t live in a downtown city if you have a car.

7. This is just a pretty picture of an Anthropologie display in LA. Love that color spill.

8. Over the past few months, I have been interning with my friend Jessica from Bramble Workshop! I shared a bit about that here.

9. Finally, and most excitingly, I was offered a job at Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co. here in Portland. They are amazing and I can’t wait to begin. It’s a dream come true!

Also, just want to say thank you to everyone who entered my Happy Fall giveaway with Angela of If Found, Make. The lucky winner is Becca H! Congrats!! We’ll be sending you your items as soon as possible.

ps. As usual, I grabbed these recap photos from the ole Instagram account. Follow along @earlgreyjenn if you want! Happy October. :)
