5 Trends That I Love (But Never Thought I Would)

03/20/2014 by Jennifer 6 Comments

Whoever decides seasonal fashion trends is pretty sneaky and powerful. Almost always, a fashion statement that I find bizarre will get into my head until I start thinking it’s actually kinda cute. Then it becomes a favorite. Just like that! I have a couple of really strong fashion-related dislikes that I don’t think will ever change (velvet and paisley…) but for the most part, I try to stay open-minded because I know that in time I might be sucked in.

These are a few of the fashion statements I have unexpectedly fallen for:

left / right

My love for leather (let’s be real, “pleather”) came about last fall. But when I first saw that “moto” was becoming a big deal, I didn’t understand. “You mean like motorcycle stuff? No thanks.” Eventually I started to think it was cool, but almost too cool. Too cool for me at least. Then around Halloween, I caved and bought leather leggings for my Gretchen Wieners costume. Thanks Gretch!

left / right
At Anthropologie, I like to play a game I call “Pajamas or Everyday Pants?” Half the pants in the store are ones I’d probably wear as pajamas unintentionally. Or maybe intentionally. Gotta keep cozy. I like joggers, or harem pants, as long as they’re not too baggy.

left / right

I used to always gravitate toward warm neutrals, but last spring when I worked at Gap, I started loving hot pink. A lot. Stores are coming out with a lot of neon shades as it is that time of year again. I’m all about it. I’m not a fan of every neon color and I only like it in small doses, but that could easily change.

left / right

Leopard print was a slow growing favorite of mine. It started with leopard printed accessories, like shoes. A couple years ago, I hesitantly thrifted a crazy vintage leopard printed maxi skirt and kept it hidden away until just a few weeks ago. I plan to wear it this weekend and just embrace it :) no more resisting.

left / right

I am so happy that the floppy hat exist. It’s the most adorable accessory ever, right? In the past, I only admired floppy sun hats on others. Then one day I decided to become a hat person, and the rest is history.

Have you ever fallen for a fashion statement that you first claimed was awful? It’s a lot like listening to the radio. You’ll think a song is so obnoxious and then once you hear it 10,000 more times, you just might find yourself singing along. :)

Kendra’s Night Out in Vegas

03/13/2014 by Jennifer 1 Comment

Oh, Vegas. My parents used to take me there when I was younger and we’d go to all of the kid-friendly attractions. I get super nostalgic thinking about the Caesar’s Palace mall with all the statues that would come alive every few hours. And the ceiling that resembled the sky and changed with the time of day. Oh and the giant toy store with the elevator shaped like a huge rocking horse. Does anyone know if those things are still there? I haven’t been there in over ten years and I’m not planning to go any time soon, but Kendra Thornton is! Kendra Thornton is a travel expert who has been featured on popular shows such as Tyra Banks and Nate Berkus. She asked me to participate in a challenge to create an outfit for her upcoming trip to Vegas. Here is some information from Kendra on what she has planned:

Help Me Dress for a Night in Sin City
The ChallengeI love spending time with my husband and kids, but I’m also looking forward to my upcoming getaway to Las Vegas. Yes, this 40-year-old mom is going out on the town. I’m going to need some stylish tips from my readers to make the most of this excursion. Help me plan the perfect outfit for an evening at The Palms Resort and Casino. To help get your creative juices flowing and keep me from committing a fashion faux pas, let me tell you a little about where I’ll be on this night out.

The ViewI’m look forward to enjoying some time unwinding with friends at the top of The Palm’s Fantasy Tower during my trip to Vegas. The View, which is located at this urban pinnacle, features breathtaking views of the Las Vegas strip and the surrounding area. It is one of the most stylish spots in Sin City for drinks, dinner and dancing, and I love the floor-to-ceiling windows surrounding the lounge area. For even more fun, I might engage my friends in a board game, and if we feel particularly energetic, we might play a round or two of shuffleboard.
No other city in the world has the variety of things to do and places to go that Las Vegas contains. I turned to the expert travelers themselves and read reviews on Gogobot to build my Vegas itinerary. Visitors can enjoy world-class entertainment at shows both on and off the strip. Regardless of how a person spends time in Las Vegas, having the right outfit for the event helps make it even more enjoyable. I look forward to reviewing your recommendations, and I can’t wait to try some new things during my getaway to Sin City.
1. Leith Floppy Straw Hat – Nordstrom $28.00
2. Paysage Earrings – Anthropologie $38.00
3. Leena Sunglasses – Sole Society $24.95
4. Mara Hoffman Rays Beach Towel – Anthropologie $78.00
5. Textured Sleeveless Keyhole Dress – Target $29.99
6. Albeit Lipstick in Cerise – Anthropologie $18.00
7. Butter London ‘Tart With a Heart’ Nail Lacquer – Beauty Bar $15.00
8. Viera Sandals – Moorea Seal $69.00
9. Oversized Leather Tote – Moorea Seal $340.00

When I think of Vegas, three words come to mind: Color. Sparkle. Humidity. Which of the three does not belong? Ha. Thankfully, that humidity can be combatted by an easy breezy outfit and well air-conditioned rooms. Instead of going overboard in the sparkle department, I focused on classic (but pretty) every day items. When traveling, I think it’s a smart idea to put the sparkle and color in the accessories. That way it’s easier to mix and match outfits without having to pack a ton. Have fun in Vegas, Kendra! Hope you find something both glam and comfortable to wear. :)

Dress Up | Shifty Thrifty

03/12/2014 by Jennifer 2 Comments

One of my favorite places to shop is at this fantastic clothing exchange store in the Sacramento area called Freestyle. It opened up around the time I began college in 2008, and it was a beautiful fashion haven for college students who preferred to be less spendy. If I’m passing through town, I always try to stop by. I sell them my clothes. I buy other people’s clothes. How ideal. :)

dress – thrifted (f21), hat – anthro, sweater – anthro, boots – target
But sometimes when I find something secondhand, it seems perfect in the fitting room and then eventually I’m like, “Oh. That’s why someone got rid of this.” One woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure for like two seconds until the other woman realizes it will become her trash as well. And so it goes… The cycle of secondhand clothing never ends.
A couple weeks ago, I found this floral dress and wore it on the sunniest day we’ve had this year. It was so nice at first, but I realized the dress was feeling pretty short. I blamed it on the wind. In Target, I embarrassed myself a bunch trying to reach for things on the lower shelves. Another day, I wore it to work and concluded that, even with tights, it is quite short and unpractical for my body type. No picking things up off the floor for me! So unfortunate. Hopefully I can find a way to make it work.
ps. I LOVE daylight savings! Losing sleep isn’t cool, but daylight at 7pm is really cool.

Bangs or No Bangs?

02/21/2014 by Jennifer 11 Comments

Hey there! Today I’m getting my hair cut and I am so torn on what I should do to it. I’ve gotten better at getting my hair regularly trimmed ever since I finally found a consistent hair lady who I think is the absolute best. Every time I go to her, I get a Brazilian blowout and I make her promise never to give me bangs, even if I end up asking for them.

The Brazilian blowout may be the most magical thing I’ve ever discovered regarding hair. It makes my hair shiny and soft but it doesn’t take away the waves. I never have to use product or blowdry my hair to make it look normal and it lasts 4-6 months. Because I have a lot of hair, I usually have it done every four months. I’ll try to do a before and after post! It really makes life easier for those of us with frizzy, tangly lion mains.

Usually, I want bangs every winter around Christmas time. I’ve resisted for two years but now I really, really want them again! Whenever I get bangs, I get insecure and pin them back. The wind is also a lame factor. If I do this again, I’ll just need to commit.

As far as bangs go, Katie Shelton, Bri Emery, and Zooey Deschanel have my favorite hairstyles. I love how their bangs are effortless looking and just a bit side swept without being “side bangs”.

And then there are my favorite no-bangs hairstyles! Elizabeth Olsen may have the prettiest hairstyle in the world. I love the long bob, but every time I cut my hair that short, I regret it big time. It’s not even that short, but it just doesn’t look good on me. I have always loved Audrina’s hair and how sunkissed it is. And of course, Jessica Biel. Oh, Jessica! This is the picture I gave my hair dresser when I first ombred my hair. I think Mrs. Timberlake is just the best.

So, once again I’m completely stuck in the middle. On the one hand, no-bangs is the safe way to go, but on the other hand I am very tired of my hair. And that’s why people get bangs, right?
Help! What do you think? I’m leaning towards bangs but that may change in the next few hours…

Valentine’s Day Style Challenge with Brilliant Earth

02/13/2014 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

The college I went to was very obsessed with weddings. It was one of the top three things anyone talked about. And while I didn’t want a “ring by spring” necessarily, I loved weddings too. In fact, I’m pretty sure weddings were what got me into blogging in the first place, which is funny seeing as I never ended up blogging about them.

During my four-year obsession with crafty weddings, I came across Brilliant Earth, a supplier of beautiful conflict-free jewelry. Aside from providing ethically-sourced diamonds and engagement rings, Brilliant Earth also has a huge selection of necklaces, earrings, and “just because” rings. The selection of colorful gemstones is probably my favorite thing about Brilliant Earth. Oh my!

Today, I’m teaming up with Brilliant Earth to share a Valentine’s Day outfit featuring some gorgeous jewelry pieces. I decided to include just a couple feminine hues in the outfit, leaving the rest warm and neutral. And then there are the dazzling earrings and necklace, which kind of steal the show. :)

1. 14K Rose Gold Diamond Halo Earrings – Brilliant Earth $1450.00
2. Manon Floppy Hat in Grey – Anthropologie $58.00
3. That’s Demure Like It Top – ModCloth $37.99
4. Painterly Infinity Scarf – Anthropologie $58.00
5. Tall Blush Pleated Midi Skirt – Dorothy Perkins $39.00
6. 14K Rose Gold Pavé Diamond Infinity Pendant – Brilliant Earth $950.00
7. Frolic to the Fun Bootie in Brown – ModCloth $63.99

This outfit seems fitting for a solo daytime adventure. Brunch, shopping, stopping by the farmer’s market… it’s breezy and ladylike but not overly glitzy. The sparkles from the jewelry are just enough for me. For a date, I would replace the blouse and skirt with a little black dress and replace the shoes with coral flats. The scarf and jewelry would stay, and the hat…yes that would stay too. I bought it from Anthro the other day and it’s the best!

Will you be dressing up tomorrow? I will probably dress casually but add a few fancy elements. Maybe I’ll paint my nails sparkly or somethin’. :)

ps. HAPPY GALENTINE’S DAY! The officially holiday is today, but I’ll be celebrating next weekend. Here are 16 reasons to celebrate Galentine’s Day this year.
