Springtime Makeup + Skincare Favorites

06/05/2014 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

I may be a little late in the game as we are definitely nearing summer, but I wanted to share some of the makeup and skincare products I have been using throughout spring. I’ve never been a huge makeup wearer but I have learned that once you start, it’s hard to stop. I started using foundation in college and felt super weird the first time. Then it became a regular morning ritual. Later, bronzer and/or blush became normal. And so forth. I’m trying to backtrack and give my face a break especially on my days off, but I’ve still got my go-to products for when I do wear makeup. :)

Makeup:
Make Up For Ever Invisible Cover Foundation – I’ve been using this here and there for the past few months. It’s so smooth and wonderful. The price is pretty high, so I’ll have to save up for round two.
Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Concealer – LOVE this stuff. This is something I have been borrowing from my mom for a month while I’m living with her. It covers my dark circles and spots in a way that is much more natural looking than the kind I was using from the drug store. This brand does some really crazy stuff. Check out this video for example.
Albeit Lipstick in Peony – I have used this brand a lot. It’s no Nars, but it is pretty nice! My favorite thing about the “peony” color is that even if it fades, it looks natural.
Benefit Cosmetics Brow Zings – Another thing I’m stealing from my mom these days. It lets you add color to your eyebrows, subtly or boldy. Your choice.
bareMinerals Blush in Golden Gate – This blush goes a really long way. I don’t use blush a lot in general but when I do, Golden Gate is my color of choice.
Stila Eyeshadow in Kitten – Neutral meets glam. I really love this one.

Skincare:
Clarisonic Mia – I bought a Clarisonic during a wonderful sale at an outlet store, and I’m going to use it forever. I’m serious. Forever. On days that I don’t use it, I just feel strange. Using a Clarisonic is way more effective than washing my face with my hands or a washcloth, and it is super gentle. It also is timed. All good things.
Boots Extra Sensitive Hydrating Serum – A few years ago, I was bombarded by a Boots sales lady in Target. She was just doing her job, but Target is kind of my sacred place to wander around, clear my head, and maybe buy a bunch of stuff I don’t need. The Boots Lady was really friendly and passionate about the brand, but I just wasn’t interested. Well, my friend Katie said she swears by it and Katie has really good skin so I thought I’d give it a try. I am really, really loving it! Ahh, should’ve listened to the Boots Lady after all.
Origins Super Spot Remover – One last thing I’m borrowing from my mom. I really like how natural Origins products are. Not sure I am seeing results from this, but I haven’t given it enough time.

Natural Regimens:
Apple Cider Vinegar – This week, I started diluting apple cider vinegar in water and wearing it on my face at night. I can’t stand the smell, but I hear that in addition to brightening the skin, it also tightens pores and clears breakouts.
Lemon Juice – I’m also giving lemon juice a try to see if it really brightens my dark spots. I keep this on until it dries and then rinse it off with cold water.

As you can see, some of these are products I swear by and some are just experiments that I’ve yet to develop an opinion about. What are your favorite skincare or makeup products? Any good home remedies?

Window Shopping | Nail Polishes for Spring

03/12/2014 by Jennifer 3 Comments

Painting my nails is one of my favorite things to do right before I am about to sit down and work on blog posts or browse Pinterest, but otherwise I don’t even bother. There are so many things I always want to do (like crochet, write, eat, etc.) that would potentially definitely mess up my nails. Regardless, those times when I do want to paint my nails are super fun. These are the colors I’m feelin’ for spring:

clockwise from top left: Poppy, Rivington, Lux, Pansy, Trout Pout, Blue Jeans, E-nuf is E-nuf, Caribbean, Jane, Blimey

Don’t you just love nail polish names? Chartreuse nail polish is blowing my mind. I can’t tell if I like it or not, but I really want to try it!

Bangs or No Bangs?

02/21/2014 by Jennifer 11 Comments

Hey there! Today I’m getting my hair cut and I am so torn on what I should do to it. I’ve gotten better at getting my hair regularly trimmed ever since I finally found a consistent hair lady who I think is the absolute best. Every time I go to her, I get a Brazilian blowout and I make her promise never to give me bangs, even if I end up asking for them.

The Brazilian blowout may be the most magical thing I’ve ever discovered regarding hair. It makes my hair shiny and soft but it doesn’t take away the waves. I never have to use product or blowdry my hair to make it look normal and it lasts 4-6 months. Because I have a lot of hair, I usually have it done every four months. I’ll try to do a before and after post! It really makes life easier for those of us with frizzy, tangly lion mains.

Usually, I want bangs every winter around Christmas time. I’ve resisted for two years but now I really, really want them again! Whenever I get bangs, I get insecure and pin them back. The wind is also a lame factor. If I do this again, I’ll just need to commit.

As far as bangs go, Katie Shelton, Bri Emery, and Zooey Deschanel have my favorite hairstyles. I love how their bangs are effortless looking and just a bit side swept without being “side bangs”.

And then there are my favorite no-bangs hairstyles! Elizabeth Olsen may have the prettiest hairstyle in the world. I love the long bob, but every time I cut my hair that short, I regret it big time. It’s not even that short, but it just doesn’t look good on me. I have always loved Audrina’s hair and how sunkissed it is. And of course, Jessica Biel. Oh, Jessica! This is the picture I gave my hair dresser when I first ombred my hair. I think Mrs. Timberlake is just the best.

So, once again I’m completely stuck in the middle. On the one hand, no-bangs is the safe way to go, but on the other hand I am very tired of my hair. And that’s why people get bangs, right?
Help! What do you think? I’m leaning towards bangs but that may change in the next few hours…

summer beauty essentials

07/03/2013 by Jennifer 1 Comment

Good morning! I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite beauty supplies for summer (and really, all year). I like to keep it simple on days when it’s 100+ degrees. Here are some things that I currently use:

1. Bare Minerals Blush in Vintage Peach. This is the first and only blush I have ever used consistently. It adds a natural peachy pink glow.
2. Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes. These are perfect for nights when I don’t feel like splashing water in my face (let’s face it, that’s every night). I stinking love these.
3. Albeit Lipstick in Cerise from Anthropologie. I used to never wear lipstick, but one day I just went for it. This shade of red is perfect for when I feel like getting a little fancy.
4. Brilliantine from Bumble & Bumble. Wanna know something weird? I have had the same 2oz bottle of Brilliantine for like, four years. It lasts forever. It only takes the tiniest amount to add a little shine to your tresses.
5. BRÖÖ Shampoo & Conditioner. This is a line of hair and body products made of beer. Apparently, it is the “super drink of hair”. I love everything about Broo from its branding and design to the way that it smells (don’t worry, it doesn’t smell like beer). I currently use the shampoo conditioner in “hydrating porter”. Yum.
6. EO Everyday Conditioner in French Lavender. I wouldn’t say that I use this at all, but if my hair is feeling dry and frizzy, it makes a big difference. And it truly is weightless!
7. “One of a Kind” by Essie. Just discovered this one in my roomie’s nail polish drawer! It is the perfect share of red. Super classic. Super summery.
8. Earth Science Tea Tree & Lavender Deodorant. I thought I’d keep it real by letting the world know what kind of deodorant I use…I guess there is nothing embarrassing about wearing deodorant. Nevermind. Anyway, it is tea tree and lavender and it’s natural and it works! Seriously. Usually natural deodorant never works, but this one really does. :)
9. Tocca Eau De Parfum in Colette from Anthropologie. I have been using this one for a year or two. It is described as “a lush mix of bergamot, citrus, juniper and pink peppercorn mingled with florals, musks and woods.” Love, love, love.

Well, those are my faves! I think I might share products I love more often. :)

What are your go-to beauty products for summer?
