The Beach House Kitchen WordPress Blog Design

07/09/2015 by Jennifer 5 Comments

Over the past month, I’ve been working on a very special project. Like I said, I have been lucky to work with lots of lovely food bloggers this year. It’s wonderful for so many reasons. I love getting to learn about a type of blogging that is pretty unfamiliar to me. Also, it is really inspiring to design around such beautiful, crisp food photographs. Another plus – I always end up with a plethora of tasty recipes to add to my list of things to try.

This past month, I worked with Mary Ann of The Beach House Kitchen to create a clean, fully-customized WordPress blog design. For the blog design, we began with the Genesis Framework and Foodie Pro Theme. We began by creating a color palette of nautical navy and gray hues with the softer addition of pink. I’m still dreaming about this color palette and want to incorporate it into my workspace big time.

Mary Ann worked with Rickety Robot to design her anchor logo. Don’t you love the spoon and knife touch? I’m also so glad we added the sand element to the header! This was Mary Ann’s idea. Love how it ties in the beachy theme.

Take a look at the entire site here! If you’re a fellow foodie, check out my favorite recipes on The Beach House Kitchen:

Bourbon White Peach Popsicles
Berry Cobbler with Sweet Biscuit Topping
The Charleston Fizz
Loaded Berry Smoothie

Perfect for summer get-togethers, huh? Those popsicles are for sure making an appearance at the next BBQ I attend. All of Mary Ann’s recipes are absolutely divine and I would enjoy them beachside any day.

DIY Mercury Jars on Darby Smart + Promo Code

07/07/2015 by Jennifer 1 Comment

How was everyone’s 4th of July weekend? I spent the day trying to be productive (or watching Netflix and painting my nails if we’re being honest) and at night I went to a gathering with some friends. I have a really strong feeling that this month is going to be amazing because this summer is already blowing my mind so far. I don’t think I’ve mentioned this yet but last month I began working at a small stationery shop in Downtown Portland full of my favorite paper brands (I want to buy everything). I only work there during the weekends and it’s so pleasant! During the weekdays, I’m freelancing full-time which is a whirlwind. So happy that I just went for it. I’ve been taking on some sweet new design projects as well as working on a small shop for The Blog Market.

Since my daily work is mostly design-related, arts and crafts have taken back their rightful spot as a fun, stress-free hobby. A few months ago, the lovely site Darby Smart came along and reminded me how much I love creating DIY projects. I recently launched my second project with them. My DIY Mercury Jar tutorial from a while back is no on their site with the option to purchase the supplies needed to finish the project. As someone who often wanders aimlessly through craft stores looking for the right supplies, I appreciate how committed Darby Smart is to making craft projects easy. They also offer free 2-day shipping so I feel like that’s about how long it would take me to get out to a craft store anyway.

Adelman Peony Gardens

07/03/2015 by Jennifer 6 Comments

I feel like I should be tired of peonies by now, but I don’t think it’ll ever happen. Maybe it’s because of the long break we get after each spring peony season. I’m sure once springtime comes back around, we’ll all be dying for peonies to take over our Instagram feeds again. Just you wait. :)

A couple months ago, I randomly googled peony gardens in Oregon and found out there was one just 45 minutes from me! My friend Bee and I drove over to the Adelman Peony Gardens in Salem and marveled over how many different types of peonies there were. Each type was on display with a special name/description. We were even given little booklets that helped us identify each peony. So freakin’ cute.

It wasn’t exactly the kind of place where you could run through fields of peonies (still need to cross that off my bucket list) but it was amazing nonetheless. Aren’t those stripey ones the prettiest? See, I’m already forgetting the fancy peony names we learned.

Are you a shameless peony lover too? They’re quickly disappearing from every grocery store in town and it’s bumming me out! Till next time.

Dreamy & Nautical Moodboard

06/30/2015 by Jennifer 3 Comments

Hi friends! I’ve been laying low for the past couple of weeks, hanging out with my family (my mom & Copper visited!), writing at The Blog Market, and working on design projects. I feel like every time I start a new project, it becomes my new favorite. Currently, I’m working on another food blog design for a client who has really great taste in…everything! I’m in love with the color palette we settled on. Navy, pale pink, and some grays. The theme of the blog is very nautical and sometimes when I think of nautical, I think of navy and white and more navy and more white. Somehow we managed to create a design that is nautical but still colorful with the addition of the pale pink. You know I love working with pink. :)

In the next week or two, I’ll be sharing the full design with you! Can’t wait!!

Broma Bakery | WordPress Theme Customization

06/09/2015 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Lately I have found myself working with a lot of food bloggers and it is amazingly inspiring! Blogging takes a lot of work no matter what, but I can’t believe how many steps go into food blogging. A while ago, I had the opportunity to work with Sarah of Broma Bakery on a WordPress theme customization. She began with the Genesis Framework and Foodie Pro Theme, and we coded the details up from there. Sarah was such a joy to work with! She knew her style completely and that made the whole process flow so well.

Our color palette remained neutral for the most part with gray-blues and charcoals but we added in a pretty gold texture to brighten things up:

Sheesh. All of her posts are TOO good.

Best Father’s Day Cards of 2015

06/04/2015 by Jennifer 1 Comment

Months ago, I gathered up all of the cutest Mother’s Day cards I could find and kept them on my secret Pinterest board just waiting around for May to arrive. And then, like a fool, I forgot to share them! So lame.  I made sure not to make the same mistake this month for Father’s Day. I love finding new favorite letterpress companies, so I had a great time searching for different Father’s Day cards to share. Also, can we just talk about how shopping for father’s is so difficult?! Getting kind of nervous that Father’s Day is 2ish weeks away, but at least I’m good to go in the card area.
