Crafty Christmas | Sparkly Star Garland

12/18/2012 by Jennifer 8 Comments

You guys. There is one week until Christmas. One week. Holy moly, right?! It always sneaks up on me. It has been so wonderful to decorate our house with simple diy projects. Like I said, I normally don’t do this. Over the past few years, I lived on a college campus and had a tiny gap between finals and Christmas day. So decorating was exhausting. Now, I’m college-free, living in a house that is begging to be decorated. Yay!

One of my favorite holiday decorations this month has been this sparkly garland:

I picked up a bunch of pretty pipe cleaners without knowing what to do with them. One morning, I got inspired and thought they would look pretty as a snowflake garland. The thing is, each “snowflake” ended up looking more like a asterisk or sometimes…a spider. I thought this was a DIY bust. Like one of those things you’d find on Regretsy.

Thankfully, I found a way to make this work. It’s not really a snowflake garland. More like an star garland. I had to improvise. :)

Supplies needed: Cotton yarn, ruler, metallic pipe cleaners, scissors, tapestry needle.

First, cut your pipe cleaners into three-inch sections. Then attach the sections by twisting them together, one at a time, until you have connected five pieces of pipe cleaner.

If your little star looks uneven, just trim the edges. I probably trimmed every star to make sure it was even.

Next, string your stars onto a long piece of cotton yarn.

Space them out evenly, cut the cotton yarn, and hang your garland somewhere nice. I hung mine above my new desk. Please excuse the mess :) I’m still trying to create my crafty station.

I hope you are having fun making your living space sparkly and festive in any way!

Crafty Christmas | DIY Felt Star Tree Topper

12/14/2012 by Jennifer 6 Comments

My roommate Sara and I decorated our Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. I have never started decorating that early before! It was a fun evening of cider and Christmas music (mostly Mariah Carey). However, we didn’t have anything to put on top of the tree, so I thought I’d make a handy felt star.

Supplies needed: felt, embroidery floss, fiber fill, a star template, and a pen.

It was super easy. I made it just like I made the heart ornament the other day. Just cut out two stars (I traced a star shape from google images), sew them together, stuff with fiber fill, and place it on top of your tree. I left the bottom of the star open, so that I could stick it onto the top branch of the tree.

What is your Christmas tree topped with this year??

Crafty Christmas | DIY Felt Heart Ornament

12/12/2012 by Jennifer 3 Comments

I love working with embroidery floss. I tend to choose no-sew projects because sewing still intimidates me. Ahhh, precision! It’s something I just don’t have. Embroidery floss is great because it makes me feel like I don’t have to be fancy and precise. It is just cute and crafty.

The other day, I made this felt heart ornament and I plan to make many, many more. I think they could be perfect Christmas presents.

Supplies needed: scissors, large needle, embroidery floss, fiber fill, felt, a heart-shaped cookie cutter (or whatever helps you trace a heart), pen and twine (not shown).

First trace two hearts onto a piece of felt. I used 100% wool felt from my favorite shop, Felt On The Fly.

Using your embroidery floss, sew the two hearts together with an overcast stitch. I used four strands of gold embroidery floss because I wanted the metallic color to stand out. Also, make sure the two hearts are facing the right side. We don’t want any pen marks. :)

When you have sewn about 3/4th of the heart, begin stuffing it with fiber fill.

Finish sewing the heart closed and then finish off your thread. I just knotted it and hid it inside of the heart.

Add some twine and you’ve got a little gem for your tree. :)

Crafty Christmas | DIY Glitter Ornaments

12/08/2012 by Jennifer 3 Comments

Here’s a little series I’m calling “Crafty Christmas.” This year, I want to make most gifts to people by hand. I tend to procrastinate, so I am challenging myself to work ahead of time and get started on a bunch of crafty projects. Until Christmas, I’ll be posting some easy ways to be festive and crafty this month.

First up: glitter ornaments! This project is inspired by a few tutorials I saw floating around Pinterest, particularly this one. I have always wondered how to make perfectly sparkly ornaments with the glitter on the inside. The answer is in Pledge Floor Finish.

Once you’ve gathered your supplies (gloves, newspaper, and a sink will also probably be helpful), fill your clear ornament bulb with a little Pledge. Swirl it around and make sure it covers the entire inside of the bulb. Add some glitter and shake the ornament a whole lot until it’s completely sparkly inside. Attach the top of the ornament. Add some twine. And there ya go :)

I made a little funnel out of a paper bag because I always get glitter everywhere.

These are so quick and fun to make! Buy a bunch of cheap glitter and go crazy :)

diy fabric pumpkins

10/31/2011 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Also, Happy Halloween! This holiday isn’t my favorite, but I love October for it’s wonderful weather, the color of the leaves, and most importantly, pumpkins. In my small group today, we made these fabric pumpkins with toilet paper rolls. We didn’t use batting, so they aren’t as round, but…still cute!
Thanks Sarahndipities for the amazing idea!
PS. More good news. My stepsister’s baby was born today :) I cannot wait to meet her.

This week has been really, really good in such a simple way. I have, by some miracle, been waking up early without a problem. My classes are interesting and relevant. My room is adorable since my roommate and I happen to have the same taste in themes and colors. I love these last days of summer. I love 30 day shred and long walks with my roommates. I love having a low key schedule.

I also love:

“summer color” paper from Joann’s
Paint Swatch Box Tutorial from How About Orange

the moonlit nest’s felt bow tutorial

Peanut Butter Honey Bees from Totally Tots

Rose Brooches from Vintage Ties tutorial from Little owl lucky
