Thanksgiving Recipe Ideas

11/23/2013 by Jennifer 1 Comment

Did any of you guys watch SNL last weekend when Lady Gaga was hosting? Kenan did this skit about taking back Thanksgiving. He ran down the streets of NYC tearing down everything in sight that was Christmasy. Now I understand buying Christmas things early and getting ahead of the game – that’s what I am trying to do this year. But I want to take a moment to remember (and plan for) Thanksgiving. :)

I love Thanksgiving so much. I feel like there isn’t as much pressure around it besides, ya know, all of that food. It is just a time to get together with loved ones and be thankful and usually a lightbulb comes on and we all think, “Wait a second, every day should be Thanksgiving Day!” Because Thanksgiving is less than a week away (weird!), I thought I would revisit a few recipes I posted last Thanksgiving time.

This baked apple and bourbon ice cream from A Beautiful Mess is the first ice cream I ever made. It was delish. A little melty because of the bourbon, but still one of the most wonderful kinds of ice cream I have ever had. And I’m not even really into apples. I might have to make this next week…

For thanksgiving with my family last year, I contributed the cranberry sauce with a little help from my friend, red wine. Yum! I found the recipe at Alexandra’s Kitchen.

My aunt and uncle have a lot of foresty land where they grow lots of fruits and vegetables. I was given a delicata squash last fall, so I made it even tastier by adding cinnamon and sugar. This recipe came from Averie Cooks and was originally for roasted cinnamon-ginger delicata squash.

Lastly, a fun recipe I found last fall was this spiced and spiked hot apple cider from A Couple Cooks.

What recipes are you trying out this season, for Thanksgiving or otherwise? I still haven’t decided on what to bring to my family’s dinner. Any ideas?

recipe box | brown butter bourbon chocolate chip cookies

09/11/2013 by Jennifer 4 Comments

The other day, I was invited to a cookout party that was liquor themed. No restrictions, the food or beverages just had to contain liquor. I thought about making some bourbon baked apple ice cream until I remembered that ice cream takes two days to make! Then I did some research on boozy cupcakes and found some interesting recipes, including a mint julep cupcake one. I guess I just wasn’t in the mood for cupcakes because I continued to look up recipes until I was in the baking aisle of the grocery store.

And then I came across a recipe for brown butter bourbon chocolate chip cookies from Bakergirl. Ummmm, okay! It took me a while to get all of the ingredients because, hey, I’m no baker lady. The recipe called for cake flour. I had no idea what cake flour was and it took me ten minutes to find it even though it was right in front of me. I need to start baking more. Anyway, the cake flour made these cookies giant and delicious.

I had to bake these as quickly as possible because I got a late start, but chilling the dough for an hour before baking it was a very important step – not one to be skipped. They ended up being a big hit at the party and when I got home, I brought the rest to my new neighbors. I met a ton of new people that night and while it may have just been circumstantial, I like to think it was because of the cookies. ;)

Cookies are my favorite food in the world, and cookies with bourbon turned out to super delicious. I wouldn’t call them “boozy” since the liquor is cooked out of it. According to Bakergirl, it just leaves a dark caramel-vanilla flavor.

Do you like adding bourbon or any other liquor to your kitchen creations?

ps. My love for cookies and my love for Carly Rae Jepsen were combined in this brilliant masterpiece. Feast your eyes upon “Share it Maybe” by Cookie Monster. You’re welcome, I guess.

tasty popsicle recipes

08/19/2013 by Jennifer 2 Comments

Summer is dwindling down (noooo…), and I’ve realized that I still haven’t made popsicles! I have never made them with anything other than plain old juice, but being creative with popsicles has always been an annual goal. I’m going to make it happen!

Before I get on my popsicle kick, I’d like to share some recipes I have come across that look pretty and probably taste amazing.

1. Citrus and Orange Blossom Popsicles – Murmures
2. Rosemary Grapefruit Greyhound Popsicles – Glitter Guide
3. DIY Refreshing Summer Popsicles – 100 Layer Cake
4. Banana, Hemp, and Salted Dark Chocolate Ganache Popsicles – The Artful Desperado
5. Striped Ice Pops – Martha Stewart
6. Salted Bourbon Caramel Pops – Autumn Makes & Does

I think what makes me most excited about this list is that popsicles can transfer over to autumn! Banana, hemp, and salted dark chocolate ganache…in a popsicle?!! This is making me so hungry.

Which recipes look most appealing to you? Please feel free to add other fun popsicle recipes to the list. :)

recipe box | fig, carmelized onion, & goat cheese pizza

07/29/2013 by Jennifer 3 Comments

This pizza post is long overdue. A couple of weeks ago, my roomie sent me this recipe for a fresh fig, caramelized onion, and goat cheese pizza. And then we made it that night. Simple as that!

Yum, yum, yum! We ended up covering it in baby arugula. Along with the pizza, we enjoyed red wine and way too many episodes of The Hills. Because sometimes you’ve just gotta watch it.

I looovvee pizza and I’m always looking for new recipes. Have any unusual favorites?

Recipe Box | Sparkling Grapefruit Sangria

06/20/2013 by Jennifer 6 Comments

Yesterday I made sparkling grapefruit sangria and it was possibly one of the best decisions of my life. I love grapefruit juice so much. It is a summer favorite indeed. Grapefruit juice + riesling + champagne + strawberries is a summertime dreeeaaamm… For the detailed recipe, visit How Sweet It Is.

I decided not to add simple syrup or sparkling water because it was sweet and bubbly enough already. Also, I didn’t have enough room in the mason jars.

My plan this summer is to make sangria all the time and lay by a pool. Any pool. Do you have any favorite summer sangria recipes? Please, please share them! I’ve gotta add to my list. :)

Refreshing Summery Drinks

04/15/2013 by Jennifer 7 Comments

Like most other blogs these day, Earl Grey might as well be a weather forecast. Today I’m going to talk about the weather. Again.

Every single time it’s unusually warm outside, I walk down the street (or drive somewhere) and buy lemonade. It’s my ritual. I think I have been doing it for years. Panera is my go-to lemonade place, unless I feel like squeezing lemons. I’m having a whole lot of lemonade lately so I thought I would explore some slightly fancier options. Here are some drinks that I already love or that I really want to try. (Warning: these are 50% grapefruit juice, 50% lemonade.)

1. Lavender Lemonade. I want it everydayofmylife.
2. Flavored lemonade recipes from ABM. The grapefruit lemonade ruled my world. I also tried mint and lime!
3. Sparkling Grapefruit Sangria. Can you tell that I love grapefruit juice? I’m a tiny bit addicted.
4. I think this Lillet Rose Spring Cocktail recipe looks refreshing and so pretty! I’ve shown this picture to so many people. a) It has grapefruit juice, b) look at those flowers.

5. Grapefruit mimosas. Now I’m just laughing at myself.
6. Peach lemonade. I haven’t tried it yet, but it sounds so perfect for a hot day.
7. Apple, Ginger, & Cranberry Vodka cocktails. I don’t drink vodka, so I’d put something else in there, but this sounds very tasty.

I have expressed my love for grapefruit juice and lemonade quite fully. But I have to be honest…my summer go-to beverage is plain old iced black tea.

What do you prefer to drink when the weather is warm? I’m always looking for new ideas. :)
